The extended shutdown of the operations of Appleton Estates in St. Elizabeth, should serve as a wake up call for all patriotic Jamaicans, as under no conditions whatsoever should our environment be compromised for silver and gold.

The problem relates to the discharge of dundar by the company into the waterways in the area, in contravention of the laws of Jamaica, a situation which has been going on for decades, despite the cries of the local community which makes a living from the resources of the Black River.

What is disturbing is that contrary to perception, the Supreme Court did not order the closure of the Appleton distillery, not at all, the court instructed the company to cease and desist from discharging any effluent into the environment, so instead  of simply complying with the court order, management has shut down the entire operation, causing job losses and forcing the government to use taxpayers money to salvage the current crop, this cannot be right!
