Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, says the indigent housing programme will be reviewed during the new financial year in order to improve response to those in need, adding that there will be increases in allocations to infirmaries and steps will be taken to strengthen institutions that deal with persons living on the streets.
“We are already spending in excess of $185 million to build new wards in infirmaries across the island.  In Portland, we’re building two, in Manchester, one; an administrative office and other facilities.  In St. Elizabeth, in excess of $25 million is being spent for a new administrative building and a new infirmary in St. James,” the Minister noted.

Minister McKenzie said that  he will be meeting shortly with all persons involved in poor relief administration islandwide to discuss the entire indigent programme.  A special meeting will be held in St. James where a new infirmary is to be built.
