It has been reported that the Government of Jamaica has received a revised plan, from a foreign company, to rehabilitate 207 kilometres of the 445 kilometre rail infrastructure in Jamaica, with an initial roll out from downtown Kingston to Linstead by December of this year.
It has indeed been a travesty that the oldest railway system in the western hemisphere was virtually abandoned in 1992 due to accumulated losses and in the process relegating once bustling towns such as Maggoty to a ghost town.
The Government would be well advised to partner with one of our premier attractions in the country, Appelton Rum Tours, which currently attracts 50,000 visitors per year, to re-activate the once popular Appleton Express Rail Tour from St. James to the attraction in St. Elizabeth, that would amount to a God send for thousands of residents in that area. For heaven's sake, let us not miss what now appears to be the last opportunity to do something significant for this corridor.
