There is hardly a day that goes by without news of multiple killings in our society and it makes no sense blaming the police, who cannot be everywhere as they are understaffed, while putting their lives on the line at all times, even though it is perceived that they are fighting a losing battle.

So what’s going on here?  Well the fact is that our justice system cannot respond in a timely manner to the thousands of cases that now constitute a monumental backlog, our lockups are overcrowded and the right to a fair and speedy trial cannot be assured, therefore, even persons accused of murder are entitled to bail, sometimes on multiple occasions, who it is alleged, commit more crimes while out on bail and the vicious cycle continues.

The bottom line is that the population has lost confidence in our justice system and this cannot be simply restored by infringing on the rights of our people, the longer we take to recognise this is the worst the situation will become, it’s as simple as that.
