Education, Youth and Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, says $10 million will be allocated for expansion of the canteen at the Mandeville Primary and Junior High School, in Manchester. Speaking at the official opening and handover ceremony for a new classroom block at the institution, on November 2, the Minister informed that the money will be available in the 2017/18 financial year.

The Minister said with a student population of more than 2,000, the school needed an expanded canteen and he also committed funding for the completion of the school’s auditorium, after other sources of funding have been sought.
Minister Reid assured that all his commitments will be honoured due to an increase in the ‘Capital A’ budget for Education.
Meanwhile, Minister. Reid said that next year, focus is to be placed on the early-childhood and primary-school sector, as some institutions within this grouping have been neglected for many years.

To that end, the Minister noted that through a special maintenance fund, $15 million will be allocated to each parish to assist with school painting and repairs, among other improvement works. The new block was built at a cost of $80.4 million under the Caribbean Development Bank-funded Basic Needs Trust Fund. The project was implemented by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF). Managing Director of JSIF, Mr. Omar Sweeney, said that the project was implemented with the aim of transitioning up to 30 per cent of the population off the shift system to a full day at school, in order to facilitate increased contact hours between teachers and students.
