The continued slide in the price of oil globally, has prevented untold suffering in our country and has served to soften the effects of the gradual devaluation of the Jamaican dollar but for heaven's sake, let us not get complacent, as what is happening now will not last forever, the dollar will eventually stabilise and oil prices will once again rise, so let us prepare ourselves to protect our economy.
While we commend the Minister of Energy, for his multitude of projects geared toward conservation and the use of alternate energy, a hedge fund needs to be set up to mitigate against the inevitable increases in the future, so that the solid gains that are being made in our economy, will lead to sustained growth in the medium to long term.
At the same time, let us intensify the import substitution initiative to eliminate the need to import red peas, onion, potatoes etc. in an effort to feed ourselves and at the same time deal with the opportunities in alternate medicine from our medicinal plants, yes we can not only feed ourselves, we can also cure ourselves, so let's get cracking.
