A sum of $30 million has been provided for the extension of the Transportation Allowance Grant (TAG), a pilot project of the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH).Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Shahine Robinson, made the announcement on November 9 in her keynote address at PATH’s Top Achievers’ Awards ceremony, held at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge.  “With the initiation of TAG, compliance steadily improved from 77 per cent in March 2014 to 89 per cent by June of the said year.  Arising from this finding, PATH now proposes to implement the second phase of the pilot between December 2016 and June 2017,” she said.

Minister Robinson noted that $6 million is to be expended monthly at an average of $3,000 per month for each child. As a result, 2,000 students will benefit from the intervention. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the first phase of TAG was introduced between April to June 2014 in 58 secondary schools that were deemed to have the highest rates of non-compliance during the academic year 2012/2013.The TAG was implemented to improve school attendance among students on PATH.
