MCOC DIRECTOR CROWNED MISS MANCHESTER FESTIVAL QUEEN
The Manchester Chamber of Commerce (MCOC) Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Ms. Victoria Cole was crowned 2012 Miss Manchester Festival Queen on Saturday, May 5th in a closely contested competition held at the Cecil Charlton Hall in Mandeville. Ms. Cole, a 24 year old graduate of the University of the West Indies holds a First Class Hons. B.A. in Linguistics & Literature, and is currently the Administrative Assistant at Christopher Grant and Associates, Commissioned Land Surveyors. She was also the 2007 Governor General’s Youth Awardee for 2007 and the 2008 Ambassador Sue Cobb scholarship Awardee. Guided by the philosophy, “Success will always find the person who, if he should fall, simply gets up, brushes himself off and continues forward”, Victoria’s goal is to pursue a career in the field of public relations and her hobbies include reading, writing speeches, poetry and community service. Victoria emerged as winner from a field of seven culturally aware, talented young ladies. Her runners-up are 19 year old Odile Blake, Author, Youth Counsellor and PACE TV Host. In third position is Chesand McCook, a 21 year old graduate of Church Teachers College, Rotaract Club Vice President and budding fashion designer. As Manchester’s Festival Queen, Ms. Cole will be focussed on implementing a programme geared towards developing the young people in the parish. TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING CRITICAL
Minister of Education, Rev. the Hon. Ronald Thwaites, said that technical and vocational training are paramount in developing a well-rounded workforce with the capability to meet the demands of the global job market and contribute to nation building. “The statistics tell us that some eighty per cent of the employment opportunities in this generation and more in the next generations to come, will require technical and vocational skills,” Mr. Thwaites said.
OVER 200 NEW JOBS FOR MANDEVILLE
The residents of Manchester are quite optimistic about the opportunities that will be created when the fourth MegaMart is opened in the town of Mandeville.
A fourth MegaMart superstore is to be constructed at a cost of over $J1.2 billion and will be completed over the next eleven months. The store is expected to employ over 200 persons as well as provide indirect employment for hundreds of small producers.
$7.2 MILLION COMPUTER LAB OPENS AT BISHOP GIBSON HIGH
A $7.2 million computer laboratory, boasting more than 70 computers and a state-of-the-art audio visual system, was opened on Thursday, April 19th at the Bishop Gibson High School for Girls in Manchester.
Education Minister, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, officially opened the facility, which was funded through the collaborative efforts of the Ministry, the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA), the school Board and the community.
